Student Activities

You can't help but get involved at Briarwood. Whether you participate in student government, work on the Yearbook, join the honor society, organize workshops, help raise funds for various projects and community needs, or enjoy sports and other leisuretime activities - there is always something to do in and around the campus. Add to this Southington's central location, and you are within easy reach of a multitude of theaters and museums in Hartford and New Haven, and other areas nearby, as well as movies and major mall shopping. As an added feature, in the spring and fall, the College organizes day trips to New York and Boston, and other interesting and cultural destinations. The Dean of Student Life and her staff coordinate a variety of recreational activities and provide opportunities for athletics, clubs, and service to the local community.

Events are publicized through The Briarwood Doings, a weekly calendar of events, as well as posters and bulletin board announcements around campus.

Students interested in starting new organizations to meet the needs of Briarwood students are encouraged to bring such suggestions to the Dean of Student Life.

Annual Events

Awards Ceremonies:
These events recognizes students’ academic achievements and extracurricular involvement.

Briarwood Ball:
The Student Government coordinates an annual formal dinner/dance which includes the crowning of a king and queen.

Class Night:
This dinner for the graduating seniors features skits with Briarwood faculty and staff and distribution of yearbooks to the graduating seniors.

Fashion Show:
Sponsored by the FAME Club, this show features students in the Fashion Merchandising Program.

Health Fair:
Sponsored by the Office of the College Health Service every two years, this event offers health screenings, demonstrations, and health information.

International Night:
Hosted by the International Club, International Night is designed to celebrate our ethnic heritages with traditional food, music, songs and dances.

Holiday Parties:
The campus community gathers for special holiday celebrations such as Christmas and Halloween.

Orientation:
Prior to the beginning of classes in the fall, the College provides a two- day orientation program for all incoming students. The program includes information sessions, social activities, and evening entertainment. A half-day orientation program is offered for students beginning their studies in January.

Pinning Ceremony:
Students in the Allied Health areas are inducted into their professions in a special pinning ceremony held each spring.

Spring Picnic:
Every Spring, the Office of the Dean of Student Life sponsors a picnic with races, games and outdoor entertainment.

Trips:
Each year the Dean of Students Office organizes a number of group excursions to places like Boston, New York, or a ski area in Vermont.

Other Activities:
Movie Nights, Karaoke, talent contests, trick-shot pool demonstration, bingo, pool tournaments, dance lessons, speakers, Women’s History Month Panel, Mobile Theater (AIDS Awareness Program), Cooking Lessons, Stress Management Seminars and other noon-hour program topics.
