Program
  • Briarwood College, in cooperation with the Connecticut Court Reporting Association, offers an 18-month, non-degree Court Reporting program. Court Reporting is a demanding but rewarding career with coast-to-coast opportunities available at your fingertips. Court reporters can work in the legal community, provide communications access for people with hearing loss, work as independent contractors or run their own agencies.
  • A captioner and/or court reporter records verbatim conversations in areas such as the courtroom, during hearings or depositions; in television doing closed captioning for the hearing impaired; in business doing cyber-conferencing as well as general rapid data entry, or medical and legal transcription.
  • An exciting career awaits students in the field of court reporting which is currently an in-demand, high-paying career. Court reporters (including deposition reporters and broadcast captioners) earn an average of more than $60,000 per year. Graduates of the program will join over 40,000 court reporters nationwide who apply their special skills in this vital field.
  • The course of study includes basic shorthand theory, punctuation and grammar for court reporting, transcription, speed development, computerized transcription, legal and medical terminology, courtroom procedures, and an internship. The program curriculum is designed to prepare students to take the Connecticut State exam to become a licensed Court Reporter. Transfer students are welcome.
