Academic Support Services
The Learning Center
The College Learning Center provides a variety of academic support services such as basic skills development in mathematics, reading, and writing; college study skills; tutoring; and guided study.
Staffed by professional instructors and peer tutors, the Learning Center also provides computers equipped with multimedia and standard software tutorials.
Developmental Classes
The College administers College Placement Examinations to determine students' placement in courses. Based upon their test scores, students may be placed in one or more developmental courses during their first semester. These courses provide additional preparation in the areas of Reading, Basic Mathematics, English Fundamentals and Composition.
English as a Second Language
Students needing assistance with English speaking, reading, and writing skills may take advantage of English as a Second Language classes as well as one-on-one tutoring by professional instructors.
Early Alert
Four weeks into each semester, Briarwood faculty review the academic progress of all enrolled students. Students who are not achieving their academic potential are urged to meet with a member of the Student Services staff to work out a plan for accomplishing their academic goals.
Jumpstart
Jumpstart is a summer program for students who need developmental courses in English Fundamentals, Reading, and Basic Mathematics. Based upon scores received on college placement evaluations, students may be required to take one or more developmental classes prior to enrolling in college level courses. Jumpstart allows students to take these courses in the summer at a reduced rate, so as not to delay their program completion.
