Computer/CD ROM Usage

Approximately 125 PCs are available for student usage. 16 PCs are available in the LeConche Hall Computer Lab to meet all student needs: Internet access, research, tutorials, personal typing and completion of class assignments. These computers will have all software available in LeConche Hall, Rooms 4 and 6, and Founders Hall, Rooms 5, 7 and 8. Several tutorial and research-related CD ROMs are available at the Library Circulation Desk. The Computer Lab is open seven days a week however the hours vary on the weekends. Five PCs in the Eder Hall lobby and 3 PCs in Palmisano Hall are available for completion of class assignments and Internet research. These PCs are available 24 hours a day. The PCs in LeConche Hall Rooms 4 and 6, Founders Hall, Rooms 5, 7 and 8, are designated primarily for classroom use.

Several program–specific labs also contain computers. Such technology access program-specific applications as well as general document completion software.

Technology Available at Briarwood College, explains the technology available to students. This appendix in the Student handbook includes PC locations, hours of availability, technical support available and specific instructions for document storage/retrieval/printing and disk virus protection.

Technology: Acceptable Use Policy, outlines appropriate and inappropriate technology usage/access. Students violating the rules for technology usage or availability will not be referred to the College Judicial Board but to the Technology Committee for disciplinary action.

Technology

Each bedroom has two computer network jacks. Connecting a student’s personal computer through these jacks allows one access to the Internet via the College T1 communication line. Connection to the network wall jack requires a network interface card (NIC) in your computer and a cat 5 patch cable.


NOTE:
Internet access via a T1 communication line is about 50 times faster than using a regular phone lines using AOL or some other commercial carrier. T1 access also does not require monthly AOL, SNET, ATT, EARTHLINK charges.
