Professional Associations
Students are eligible to become Associate Members of the Connecticut Broadcasters Association. The Connecticut Broadcasters Association was founded in 1955 and represents a composite membership of commercial, public, religious, school and college radio and television stations. Related non-broadcast organizations and individuals, involved in aspects of broadcasting (such as education, legal, and other related areas) fully participate as Associate Members.
CBA member radio and television stations sponsor many public service campaigns on such subject areas as: drug and alcohol abuse, combating illiteracy, weather and other emergency information, promotion of state tourism, etc.
Through its various means of communication, CBA publicizes job opportunities, job-seeking requests, and other information of interest to those involved in broadcasting in the State of Connecticut. CBA presents special interest, and management seminars for its members and their staffs on such subjects as — sales, the changing broadcast technologies, audience measurement, legislative and regulatory matters, and on other pertinent issues as the profession/industry changes.
CBA offers scholarships to student residents of Connecticut who are pursuing careers in Communications or Marketing.
The Briarwood College campus radio station WBCR is a member of the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System. IBS is an association of college radio stations that benefits from numerous services and resources provided by the collective group and other member organizations, such as the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB).
Among its services, IBS provides its member stations with a bi-monthly Radio Newsletter, that offers information on semi-annual broadcast conferences for students nationwide at discounted rates, new online (legal) music libraries available to students at minimal fees, and new products and publications of interest to broadcast and journalism students.
IBS also offers many direct services to the broadcast students such as intern programs, free email accounts, taped broadcast materials, legal handbooks, free news feeds from Collegiate press wire, and a low-cost web design and streaming service for college radio stations.
The website for the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System is www.ibsradio.org.
